We are heading to Holocene for yet another dMob deLux where we will meet new friends and promote the vote. This month, we team up with ASMP (the American Society of Media Photographers) for an AIGA art opening of national Get Out the Vote posters. The poster project started in 2004 when AIGA invited designers from across the United States to create nonpartisan posters that inspire the American public to participate in the electoral process and vote for a presidential candidate in the 2008 general election. At dMob, the Portland AIGA chapter will be displaying the posters from the 2008 Get Out the Vote campaign and distributing them via raffle by the end of the evening. You can catch a preview of the posters and download them here <http://www.aiga.org/content.cfm/get-out-the-vote> .

This dMob will be one of many joint events that seek to provide more integration and communication among creatives in different fields in Portland. That’s right, we are seeking out new creative allies. ASMP is one such ally, a fantastic organization of photographers that boasts a website complete with a “find a photographer” section, allowing a visitor to search by specialization. We hope that as designers and photographers meet, the sparks will fly, or maybe just the flash.

Cheers, to October’s dMob deLux!

The dMob Concept
This is our monthly gathering for the entire Portland design community. Social interaction and networking is the core of this monthly event. AIGA Portland wants to encourage discussion, business development, and help foster a more dynamic design community here in Portland. Plus, with such a plethora of independent breweries, our choice of venues and beverages is expansive.

Fees
Free and open to the public. That’s right, no charge! For one, you’ll have a great time. And even better, it’s an amazing opportunity to network and meet fellow designers.

How It Works
It’s simple. When you arrive, you’ll get a sticker to wear. Venture forth, find another sticker-wearer and offer them a drink. That’s the trick: you can’t just drink your own, that just wouldn’t be social. It’s a great way to break the ice.

Additional Info
If you have questions or would like additional information, please contact: info@portland.aiga.org

dMob now has a permanent web page on the Portland AIGA site. Go to http://portland.aiga.org/events/network for all your linking or bookmarking needs. You can now view past event photos at our Flickr gallery: http://www.flickr.com/photos/portland_aiga

Print and Pint Night

When: Thursday, June 19, 7 - 9 pm

Where: The Lucky Labrador NW, 1945 NW Quimby, (503) 517-4352

Cost: Free (cash bar, great food available)

“Why I Love Photography Today”

With fundamental changes in the ways our businesses work, there have been stressful events in lives of many professional photographers recently. In this climate, it’s easy to lose sight of the fact that there are also many very exciting, even revolutionary things happening in the photo world.

The development of outstanding printers and paper comes immediately to mind, but that’s just one of many examples. How about high quality, affordable self-publishing, the ability to shoot in “available darkness” like never before, the possibility of getting portfolio quality images from tiny, completely silent cameras, the ever-closing gap between still and video imaging…

We want to see (and hear about) the things that you are doing in this brave new world.

Make a few prints of any project or exploration (assigned or personal) that was made better, more interesting or even just “not impossible” by some new method. It could be a technique, a material or simply a new way of thinking that resulted from any of the exciting new horizons in photography today.

Bring up to six prints, any size, any format, and be prepared to share a bit about them with the group. It’s a great opportunity to recharge your creative batteries and hang out with fellow photographer colleagues!

ASMP Oregon is proud to be partnered with Focus on Youth. If you’re interested in volunteering and helping out, please keep reading below.
Dear Friends:

You have the power to make a difference in our community and in the lives of at-risk youth who are struggling to stay engaged with their education and on the path to graduate.

I am writing to ask for your support to provide critically needed volunteers for summer and after school mentoring for high-risk youth.

Last year, 7,963 students dropped out of Oregon Schools without graduating. Portland Schools Foundation has identified 1500 Portland teens who are at-risk of dropping out of school. Their extensive research has determined that mentoring programs are the key to keeping these high-risk youth in school.

The mission of Focus on Youth is to empower at-risk and homeless youth through photography by providing creative outlets to make positive changes in their lives.

We need volunteers to mentor high-risk teens for summer photography workshops beginning June 19, 2008. Professional photographers, students and hobbyists are welcome to join us.

A volunteer meeting is scheduled for June 7th from 10 am to 11 am at the newly constructed 1800 sq.ft. studio and darkroom at 1028 SE Water Avenue.

Mentors will teach students to operate a 35 mm camera, develop film and print black and white photos in the Focus on Youth darkroom. Students will go on “location shoots” with mentors around the city and learn portrait lighting in the studio. Classes will be held at the studio 3 mornings per week (Thursday, Friday & Saturdays) from 9 am to 1 pm. For 6 weeks beginning in June.

Focus on Youth inspires hope in disadvantaged youth by helping them build confidence from which to succeed. Our students are from diverse cultures and ethnic backgrounds, most are living at or below the poverty line.

Focus on Youth is making a difference in the lives of high-risk youth by:

Keeping students engaged with their education, and preventing them from dropping our of school

Providing students with a adult advocate who is a good role model

Exposing student to career opportunities

Teaching students valuable skills that are transferal to their educational opportunities

Providing students with the opportunity to succeed and build good self-esteem while expressing their creativity

Our ability to meet the needs of high-risk youth, and keep them engaged with their education and on the path to success depends on friends like you. Now, more than ever we need your help. Thanks in part to the expansion of Focus on Youth we expect to provide vitally needed mentoring for over 100 youth this coming year. We cannot meet this challenge without your support.

Visit our website at www.focusonyouth.org to download a mentor form, or contact us at 503 341-6878, or send an email to focusonyouth@gmail.com.

Please consider volunteering, donating a camera or making a contribution to Focus on Youth. Together we will change the future for high-risk youth and help to keep them on the path to graduate. Your help will make a difference. We are a 501(c)(3) non-profit, your donations are tax-deductible!

Thank you for your caring and support,

Donna Lee Holmes
Focus on Youth Director
